Accessibility Plan Reviews

What is an Accessibility Plan Review?

An accessibility plan review is the study of a proposed building plan(s) that is done to determine a defined level of accessibility. Beginning with the site plan and progressing through the plans, elevations, sections and details, a trained specialist(s) identify items that are assets or deficits in the accessibility of the environment. Depending on the type of audit, the report(s) provided may range from a few pages to a comprehensive package including reference architectural drawings and further referrals. The report serves as a guide to achieve desired accessibility goals for the final building. An accessibility plan review is the first step in creating an environment that is inviting, safer and easier to use.

What are the Different Types of Accessibility Audits?

There are many types of accessibility audits. Audits may be focused on a certain type of disability or a certain area of the building. There are several different levels of accessibility standards set by a variety of different recognized organizations and authorities. For example, a simple code conformance audit will determine if a building meets the current Ontario Building Code (OBC) requirements. To realize a setting that goes beyond the minimal building code requirements, a universal design audit strives to offer an environment that is more inviting for all users.

How is a typical Accessibility Plan Review Conducted?

Step 1
  • Initial consultation and meeting to determine the scope of review required
Step 2
  • Submission of a written proposal outlining the scope, and estimated cost
Step 3
  • Depending on the scope of your project, our work can begin with program recommendations and continue to the review of plans and specifications at the design development & then working drawing stages
Step 4
  • Present findings and submit report(s) at the end of each design phase or as agreed

What will be in the Report?

The content of the report(s) will depend on the type and extent of audit that the client requests. The following is a list of items that might be included:

  1. Scope of review - description of the purpose of the report.
  2. Code and Guidelines Summary - relevant codes and guidelines that require compliance.
  3. Review results - that summarizes assets and deficits.
  4. Recommendations - list of products or changes to present plans to meet desired accessibility.

Cost of an Accessibility Plan Review?

The cost of an accessibility plan review will depend on the scope of the audit requested. A simple audit to determine if the plan meets Ontario Plan Code (OBC) requirements can typically be relatively inexpensive. An audit that considers the full range of future building users or a report that contains design solutions and higher accessibility standards would be more expensive.
